Hi,

When we had a "place in France", our commune's war memorial was a plinth in memory of a B17 shot down in 1943. See photo. Only one member of the crew baled out and survived. Rememberance day involves the locals dressing up in GI uniforms (including side-arms) and driving round in Jeeps, Chevies, etc.

Our village was Le Deluge, near Evran, two hoots and a holler from Dinan.

I wonder if I can find the story of the B17 that landed back in UK, with an ME109 buried in the fuselage. This was later declared to be semi-fictional ... it may have happened, but not as described.

My father told me (he might have lied) that the Yanks are not allowed into Gibraltar. This followed a bar-room brawl escalating into two rival,( anchored), war ships lining their guns up on each other.

Great photos, Mike. My fathers oldest brother was a bomber pilot with the 8th air corps stationed in UK during WW2. My father was with the 1st Marine division and landed on Okinawa when he was 18 years old. He was a radio man and gunner on a amphibious tank. His other 2 brothers served in the air corps. They all made it home. My grandmother was so proud of the 4 blue stars on her front window. My Aunt was a aircraft spotter. They are all gone now. These men and others like them are truly the greatest generation. I have my father's 1942 Willys MB Jeep. It is Marine Corps and has the unit markings from his unit. He owned it for almost 50 years!

Hi,

I enjoyed reading the books by WEB Griffin, about the war in the South Pacific, including Australia and New Zealand. I found the authors "style" a bit irksome, but the books were one long "ripping yarn".

They were all available in my local library, in South Wales, UK. Give then a try. Best if you read them in the right sequence, so start with "SEMPER FI"

Hi,

Log onto https://www.warhistoryonline.com/articles/ww-ii-b17-survival-story.html, look at the pictures, stand back in amazement.

If you want more, Google "ME109 CRASH B17"

One evening, we went to the Swansea Historic Vehicle Register pub meet. A mate pointed to an old codger sitting in a corner, and whispered "That's Dizzie Adicott". The name meant nothing to me, so asked I asked "Who's that?". "He did the stunt flying for the film "Memphis Belle" So I went over and introduced myself ... as you do.

I learned later that Dizzie was a consultant for the film, but actually flew the camera plane that did the mid-air close up photography. Dizzie was also involved in the development of the Mini Marcos, and the Mini Jem. Google "DIZZIE ADDICOT" He died, at the wheel, from a heart aneurism. (sp?)
