I always run a second test. I have heard that sometiimes removing a spark plug will dislodge a piece of carbon that gets stuck in the valve seat and causes a false reading. Well, you can always hope.

In reply to # 65892 by K1MV Did a compression test on my 948 Morris this afternoon here’s the result:

Cylinder 1 90 PSI
Cylinder 2 145 PSI
Cylinder 3 145 PSI
Cylinder 4 144 PSI. without oil

Cylinder 1 92 PSI
Cylinder 2 160 PSI
Cylinder 3 165 PSI
Cylinder 4. 160 PSI using 1 teaspoon of oil in each cylinder

Looks like Cylinder 1 has a valve problem the others look pretty good. Any suggestions as to how to fix the low compression on #1?. Maybe pull the head and replace the valves?

Valve

Compressed air into #1 cylinder. Listen at the exhaust pipe (most likely) or the air inlet (carburetor) Least likely.

Just drive it and then recheck it, probably just a little rust on the valve / seat from sitting open.

Parthuman, good suggestion and that’s what I’m planning to do. I reset the valves today they were all tight, car seems to run great so I’m just going to enjoy it. It is getting cold here so she’ss be up on jack stands soon.

Turn the engine over by hand i/2 turn every 2 weeks to prevent rust from forming on the valves or seats. Odly enough when an engine is shut off it will usually stop in the same position almost every time causing the same valves to stay open to the elements throughout the storage season - allowing the evil rust mites to attack.

That is a good practice but I try to use all my motor cars at least 25 miles a month year round. A little harder to do with the MG than the two Minors which are my transportation.

The other thing with valve clearances is the feeler gauges, if someone has tried to check the tappets whilst it is running, the feeler gauges will have been hammered a bit thinner.

Using a dial gauge, can provide some interesting results, with cupped components.

I finally hung the rear wings on the '57; used the old welting from one of my '60 donor cars to copy new beading... apparently Morris moved the bolt holes on me.... the piece i cut to fit, using the old one as a pattern, did not fit as advertised. Bugger. One side has a welting, the other does not, as I intend to buy the correct pieces now. Now to work out the correct sequence to refit everything....

the correct welting should more than fill any void and dress the fender to the body.....if not the makers of the welting will need to address their product.

I've seen better days but they have cost me more money..!

I have a second piece of welt I will try to get the bolt spacing correctly done on. Can't figure out why the '60 welt didn't line up with the '57 fender... anyways; unlike last month, it's too darn cold to be outside today.

Commercial and leisure/Pleasure vehicles have different rates of road tax in the UK. Back in the 50s and 60s it could make big difference to price and use.

We just bought a Morgan F Super that was once owned by an uncle of mine in the early 1950's. We picked it up in our Ironhorse Twobike trailer and it just barely fit so we traded that off for the slightly larger Widebody trailer and used the Morris truck to move it around the place.

Lovely bit of kit, I guess powered by a Ford Ten 1172cc side valve engine.

My old eccentric friend Barry has a 1930s Morgan 3 wheeled with the V Twin JAP aircooled engine.
He built himself a sand racer with the agricultural version of the engine during lockdown, for an annual event we have called Race the Waves at Bridlington. If interested bough are in this video at about 6 and 8 minutes in.
