After cleaning up and stripping layers of paint from the rocker cover, timing cover and front plate prior to painting in Mowog green, I took the thermostat cover off and got a shock. Wow.

I'm really curious as to what it looks like under the thermostat.

Wow Tim,
is the thermostat actually still under there or is that bronze disease with a vengeance!!!!
Normally the studs are the issue, but that is pretty gross.
Have the wax pellets escaped? Or just detritus.
I'll be interested in what comes out Tim
All the best Johnny

I've never seen anything like that in any engine I've ever opened. our cooling system may need a lot of cleaning, and I mean A LOT! Good luck. Luckily A-series engines are darn nearly unbreakable, so you'll get it straightened out. That looks like dried out antifreeze to me, so removing it from the block and head is not impossible. Your radiator will also need a really good cleaning.

Tim,
If the motor was sitting for a prolonged period with the thermostat housing exposed, my guess is that the motor has been the 'residence' and storage area for some mice.
If the lower hose was not connected it might pay to check out the water pump too.

Here's a video of what I found. I'll be changing the water pump and will take the head off for a decoke, clean and checkover. I only recently bought the engine so I've no idea what the radiator might have looked like!

Thanks for the video. What you have there is not dried out antifreeze, but corroded aluminum from the inside of the thermostat housing. Aluminum fluff looks just like that. I bought a used 1275 a few years ago and found the same thing, but not nearly as bad. If it had been something else, you would have found much more corrosion inside the chamber below the thermostat. Clean out the thermostay housing, and if you find any pin holes, replace it. Other than that, it looks like you have a straightforward rebuild ahead of you.

I removed the front bumper and spoiler to re-align the chrome strip and replace some missing and rusty bolts. These were missing when I purchased him and it was annoying me. I also fixed the alignment of the bonnet although I still have some work to do there, cleared the washer hose and then gave Percy a good wash followed by a waxing.
