In reply to # 22029 by 0123 Likely, the plugs took umbrage Sir,
they don't like it up 'em.

Soot that is.

May I suggest you drive it gently
in 1st until it's nice and warm,
and then give it an Eyetie decoke.
beore you pop ot away.

It may not solve your problem
but it's a good excuse for a jolly smileys with beer

Unfortunately, Mike - the prior Saturday evening brought with it an ice storm with thunder, lightning and large hail - in my post code, anyway. This then inspired the local county to recover our roads in a ridiculous amount of road salt for what amounted to very little accumulation, and early Sunday morning brought with it not only sunshine, but low-40+ degree temperatures that melted everything - rendering the salt application completely pointless. So Sadie is once again not going anywhere - in low, or any other gear - until we have another thunderstorm to wash it all away. Salt, rinse, repeat - evidently!!!

After getting home from the British Car Swap Meet in Wheaton, IL - I took Sadie for a nice long drive, as it was nearly 60 - and very sunny.

I fortunately sold enough stuff to pay for the new exhaust from Maniflow - which, by the way, is a very quality bit of kit.

Cheers,

Tom

Changed oil to Valvoline VR1 20/50. It pours so thick it started coming out the top by the last quart. 1275 engine, clean inside. I'll be getting the 20/40 next time.

You get better cold

lubrication Phil.

Not to worried about cold as it rarely gets below freezing here. I just finally followed the MG crowd about this oil and did it against my better judgement. It's OK for now, it will probably not drop below 80ºF 27ºC until late September.

You aughta be Phil.

The cold end of your scale is 27C.
The hot end of your range is say 85F

Clock the Mahle Clevite's statement.

Clock the Viscosity V Temp Graph.

That's happened to me on my Austin America. You just need to pour it more slowly, especially if pouring from one of those 5 qt jugs. But for my climate I'm still sticking with 20w 50.

I've never seen 0W 50 for sale here but Castrol GTX 20w 50 is available at Walmart Super Stores for about $16.00 with no tax for a five quart jug so that is what I go with.

Yes John, that is what I use. The GTX 20W50- 5ltr jug sells here for about $18cdn and it is convenient to buy. I use GTX in my Jeep as well, but 10W40 year round, no noises and no oil use between changes, about 3 times a year on the Jeep.

I also have never even heard of a 0W50, but 0W5, 0W20 and 0W30 yes. I would think the range would be too great to be reliable, unless a very well developed Synthetic for specific purposes.

Yes you have to be patient when pouring it in, I let the funnel fill, then empty then I refill and wait again.

On another note, the weather is finally clearing and warming up here little by little each day. I have the last third of my steering wheel cover to finish and the installation of the new toggle switches for the Wipers and Headlamps. I discovered that even though they are Lucas parts, they both require a larger hole in the dash panel. I may get that done today, as the new wiring for the problem Speedo Lamps is completed, they now operate directly from the headlamp switch. That switch they originally attached to was the problem, shorted and burned inside the switch.

Mine overfilled using a small funnel with a 1/2" opening at the bottom and 1 quart containers, opening them one at a time. I didn't even think about possibility of overflow, outside temp being 80ºF. Only thing I can think is the dip stick was in the engine, oil started to go down when I removed it.
