Hello Group,

In doing work on my newest car, the 1952 Series ll, the castle nuts on both of the tie rods were rusted so bad that I had to cut them off and I damaged the treads beyond repair when doing the removal. I know, should have been more careful, but as some say Stupid Bastard don't you learn anything?

Anyway my question is, What steel do you think they used originally and do you think it has been heat treated or hardened in any way? I did the simple file check and it seems soft. Has anyone made a replacement or cut the end off and welded a new threaded end back (not strong in my opinion) on the existing? I'm inclined to make a new one from cold rolled steel and flatten the end to fit the "A" arm then tread a new end after running it in the metal lathe to fit the grommets and washers on the end of the rod.

So what says those in the know!

hi,
just buy 2 new ones, not expensive, both the same age and condition I guess?
even good usable used ones if available!
just a thought, have fun with your new car too, remember its a hobby and you will have many hurdles to over come,
when the going gets tough, remember "its just a hobby" thumbs up
good luck

I've seen bent ones. I don't see the need for high temper since it just sees an axial load. How about building the rusty, damaged end with weld and then turn and thread? You seem to be looking for a project.

Hi Group,

I appreciate the feedback. I just try and do what I can vs buying all new parts and pieces to make the car whole. I'll see if anyone has one around the area first, but if I need to I'll make a new one vs the welding idea since I would feel better about a new piece of steel vs the weld strength when all done.
