The one on the left was what came on my 59 Morris minor. The one on the right appears to look more like the ones that I see in numerous photos in Ray Newell’s book 56 through 62 Morse minors. I’m wondering what the one on the right may have went to originally if it’s not the correct one for my car. Hoping somebody can shed light on the subject. Thanks in advance

My 67 has the knob on the right

If it was good 60 years ago, does that mean it can't be improved?

I think the one on the left is a nice Series 2 wand/pudding stirrer type shift knob, where you have to pull up the lever to get it into reverse. Attached is a picture of the ESM reproduction, which has a similar profile.

The Series MM one is a bit different, but similar, attached is the one on the 1950.

Right one I reckon is correct for a '59.

The small ball knob was used for 948s. Although there are some with the common later one. Perhaps owners replaced them because the round ones can be loose. I don't think Spridgets ever had the ball style.

Interesting, didn't know that, but it seems all the reproductions are the later teardrop design. Even Ray Newell's book (pg. 61 top) has a '57 with the later type, also a '61 on the next page. Didn't have too much luck with searching other than a listing on Ebay UK with what the original 948 looks like. Bit out of focus. Also the 948 owners manual interior schematic shows the round knob, 1098 the later design.

I think Jim is right, over time they have been replaced by later type, probably better design and there aren't reproductions available of the original to replace when they become loose.

In this pic, the knob that I am holding is original to the car (1959).

If Spridgets only had the teardrop style, then it's possible the factory might have substitute if supply was slow for some.

Thew teardrop shape was standard on the MG TD in the early 1950's. I have one of those. My 1961 Minor came with an after market walnut shift knob. I see no reason to change it since my car isn't stock.
