I believe if I knew what the wires used to go to would be a big help. What the heck can these wires be that are just hanging loose?

The first issue on the list of todos was a battery. I chose an inexpensive Wallmart group 34 positive post on the left negative on the right. I am learning about a positive ground car. Not fully understood by me and why.
Pushing forward on getting the car started and with a battery in place I needed to add fuel. I put a small amount of gasoline in a bottle and stuck the intake hose from the gas tank into the bottle. Simple and no danger of fumes.
No luck. The car was not going to start no matter how long I was on the start button even when the choke pulled which I had to discover which knob it was.
I wanted spark I thought. I took off the distributor cap and pulled the rotor. It was rusted so I cleaned it. I pulled the coil lead out of the distributor and pushed it back in for a good connection.
I saw the hose leading to the vacuum to the distributor was off so I reconnected it to the carburetor.
Key on, putter on the fuel pump, I was ready to start.
Boom, it started. Like a race beyond control. Like a full throttle was engaged.
Yet I was barely on the gas.
Checking, I see the choke is extended and preventing the carb piston from closing. I check the SU reservoir and the cap was loose. Some oil was in the pot so I was ok there. It needed a topping off but I put it off for later.
Pulled the choke all the way out and tried starting again.
It worked! Now I have to find out why the fully pulled choke allows the car to start and not pulled the car will not start.
It was a good day.
The car started. Loud, no muffler. Fumes but not ugly oil burning fumes I am OK with the look of the exhaust.
Now on to MMForums for review and questions.
