My instructor made it simple, 'You can't weld rust'.

Always best to cut back that bit further.

More practical ways than grit blasting Mike

As you said Mike D you generally pay someone these days to do your welding so have you ever used one of these compressor run economy grit blasters before doing welding yourself or does it just seem a good idea?

Because I'd rather use a flap disc myself. Totally agree with what Mike C says and suspect that he knows more about welding than either you or I Mike D. So I will leave this topic now as I am spent, but would love to hear more from Mike C and other regular welders.

In reply to # 34536 by mikec4193 Hi Morris Minor folks

I have a MIG and I run with a "triple mix" it is CO2, Argon and something else....I run .023" thick wire...I have welded 1950's truck frames with it and you set the numbers low enough on it you can weld 26 gauge sheet metal too...the gas seems to make the welds a lot smoother...the key with MIG is the preparation...you gotta keep everything really clean Please will you explain how you get everything really clean Mike thumbs up or the bead won't penetrate and it pops a lot...

my 2 cents

MikeC
Angle grinder and wire brush too...works for me...
