According to http://constructionmanuals.tpub.com/14273/css/Brake-Springs-253.htm
"Hold-down springs hold the brake shoes
against the backing plate
when the brakes are in a released position."
From my end of the spy glass: -
the pull back springs,
as long as you fit them
behind the brake shoes,
only exert a very small force
pulling the shoe against the backplate.
Probably not enough force to make sure
the shoes don't move enough
to contact the turning drum
over, say, a bumpy road.
The hold back springs make sure
the shoes cannot hit the drum
over, say, bumpy roads.
Hence they were known as
anti-clatter, anti-chatter springs
when I were a nipper.

I've had pretty good luck with just a wide slot screw driver. Push in and tip to get the hook to connect with the tab on the back plate then release. But I will say there is a knack to it gained over time.

The shoes move.
The backplate doesn't.
Move the shoe
towards the axle shaft.
Fit the spring
with the hook
facing the eye.
Compress the spring.
Move the shoe
and the spring
towards the eye.
One hand compresses the spring.
The other hand moves the shoe.
You may find it suits you better
to move the shoe away from the shaft
at the start,

Hi Mike , well the beehive springs along with the other 4 arrived from UK , I agree what a " bath plug " of a thing to fit , I removed about 2 mm from end of hook to allow more clearance , not sure what angle the hooks were in when vehicle left the factory but after about one hour trying to fit the first beehive I realised that the hook was bent to aprox. 45 degrees , I bent it to 90 degrees making sure hook never fouled the brake shoe , that made fitting beehive easier, only took the rest of the day !!!!!!!
I used the pointed pillars and washer trick, had forgot about that until I saw suggestion on here.
.
I agree beehives should be fitted , brake shoes were worn at a uneven pattern from one corner of shoe to opposite side other end,, other way I guess would be to drill hole in backing plate and fit anchor pin, spring and cup.
Cheers and Thanks for Information
