Can anyone tell me what's up with the big hole on the back part of the battery box/fire wall of the Morris?

Is it a stamped hole? Might be ventilation, batteries do gas off (explosive hydrogen!) if they are overcharged from, say, a broken voltage regulator, maybe it's a safety feature grinning smiley

Got this answer from someone that knows more than me:

"Looks like the hole is for a production technique when a pole was put through the car and turned round for painting"

There you have it, mystery solved!

thats right , the shell was put on a spit at the factory and dipped (rolled) through several(6) stages of rust prevention.it was then painted while still on the spit.

Blocking the hole will stop a lot of fumes and noise from the engine compartment, but if you are keeping your morry all stock this is not an accepted modification. Just a section of alloy can solve the problem.

I believe these were originally fitted with a sealing plate and ring. It's shown in the Body Service parts manual, but the part identifying page is missing.

This hole was purposely pressed and, indeed, a pole was stuck through it so the entire shell could be worked on during production and what's more important it served for the so-called ROTODIP.
The entire shell went through a process of 3 'dippings' into enormous ' swimmingpools' prior to painting.
i.e. to submerse the shell in a tankfull of rust inhibitor, was intended to ensure that the insides of chassis legs etc also received a protective coat.

1 bath for decreasing.
1 bath for fosfating the shell.
1 bath for primer.
Maybe the last bath is the reason that we still can enjoy our cars.
The cars left the factory with a sheet of PVC firmly glued over the round hole as is under discussion.

Anyone

I've never removed the wooden plate that must be covering this hole so don't know it's size.

Would the hole be suitable for running an air duct on my 1000 since there is no factory hole for this? I know the battery would have to be relocated but it sounds better than cutting a new hole in the firewall and having to get it certified.

I used rubber floor runner glued with 3M 77 spray adhesive to the back and floor of the battery box to cover the hole. Looks decent and does the job inexpensively. Jessica

Jeeez Jessica that is soooo sweeeet, and with a little plant stickin out the roof too.
Another way of blocking up the 'ole is to use a couple of old British Rail ham sandwiches, the ones with the curly corners, a bit of plasterboard and a last weeks' copy of the Sun (newspaper) to fill in the gaps. Gob that lot in the 'ole with a good dollop of pug and Bob's yer uncle, or not as the case may be.
HaHa bodgers rule!
P.S. love ya really

This is exactly what I did on my pickup, except I used stainless steel.
