Steering wheel question?

Will a Sprite or Midget steering wheel fit the MM shaft?
I'm looking to buy a car with a loose original steering wheel that someone drilled through and stuck a screw through the shaft and base of the wheel to keep it steerable. Not safe to drive 170 miles home, at least if I'm driving! Yes, a trailer would be best...

Thanks,
Pat

There is a post about this somewhere. I think it does not work, splines are different.

According to the ad it fits

Reference OE/OEM Number: MINI BOSS, MORRIS MINOR, SPRINGALEX, MOUNTNEY, MINI BOSS KIT, STEERING WHEEL, POLISHED BOSS, MINI POLISHED BOSS, NARDI, MOMO, MOTA LITA, MOTALITA, MOMO, NARDI

Break the old hub off the spokes.

Drill the boss to take the spokes.

Bolt together.

Drive home.

Or buy a 2nd.

No Sir: Splines and diameter are different.

You could be right Gerard.

I take it to be a badly worded ad.
Springalex make a variety of bosses.

I could be right?! ... No, I am right. I have and do own both Spridgets and Morris Minors, and I have both extra columns and extra steering wheels. I have check before, and they are not the same. The Morris spline diameter is 3/4", the Spridgets are 5/8" Later Sprites and Midgets have a different spline count, but the same diameter.

Hey, come on Gerard, how do you know for sure
Springalex don't make a boss that fits a Minor confused smiley

Have you asked them for instance?

Thanks for all the input.
It looks like I've found a friend with a small car trailer to help me bring it home safely.
Then the fun begins...

Hi Pat M,

So what did you buy? We would be curious to know and maybe even a picture would be great.
Best of luck on the new find either way.

Hi Chris,

I don't own it yet, but it is a "running" Traveller project with good bones. It's been off the road for 25+ years. It goes and stops and needs lots of TLC, to say the least.

Pat

Hey Pat,

We will look forward to a pic or 2 and all the details when you get it home for inspection. sounds like you have a winner for your next project.
Congratulations and best of luck!

The photo is very flattering! At least it's mostly there. Datsun A14 and 3 speed automatic set low to clear the steering rack. RHD and power discs up front. Needs lots of TLC; wiring, steering wheel & column, interior, paint, suspension rebuild, wood refinished/repaired, etc.. Lotsa fun!

Hi,

So if Pat's wheel is loose on the MM column, it must be bigger than 3/4"? MGB wheel? I think Range Rover and MGB are interchangeable. spline-wise, but don't take my word for that.

I have heard of a car being steered by Mole grips (self locking pliers). A pair of Moles would let you steer it like a bike, but not a good idea on the public road.

Hi,

Try this for size.

https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p/steering-wheel-boss-for-austin-leyland-morris-minor-all-years-from-springalex-sb008e

But get them to confirm that it IS what you need.
