I've had good luck with Permatex HiTack. It works like contact cement. There is also a red Permatex gasket maker (not Silicone) that works good between machined surfaces that I like to use. Just can't remember what it's called.

If it was good 60 years ago, does that mean it can't be improved?

If it's a paper gasket just
soak it in water and use it..

If you will feel happier
flashing some oak
use Hylomar Blue thumbs up

Just soaked mine in water and it does not leek.
If the surfaces are clean you do not need any thing.

Remember what ever you put on this time you will have to deal with next time.
