Air conditioning for my Traveller

My current project is adding AC. There is a company in Florida that sells ac systems for older cars and hotrods, Nostalgicairparts.com. They even have a set up specifically for Austin Minis. It looks pretty easy, and should cost about $600 - 700. Worth it in my book.

My 1275cc came originally with an "air pump" running off a second groove on the water pump/fan pulley, now not in use. I will use that to drive a small, efficient compressor. The expansion unit with built in heater is an easy fit under the dash, and the plumbing is simple enough.

There are only two concerns. First there is no room between the stock radiator and the grille for the condenser unit. However, a new radiator for a 1980's Toyota Hilux pickup looks to be an easy fit, and as it is much thinner, should allow room. The other, of course, is loss of power. Given that this summer in the sunny south has been hotter than hell, I'll go slower, use more fuel, but, by god, I shall be cool!

I add, I look forward to a real heater this winter, too. The old Smith's unit, while cute, no longer cuts the mustard.

I'll keep you posted as matter develop.

Martin, that is GREAT! I was, however, planning on a slightly smaller unit, mostly for aerodynamics.

Alex,
I've thought about doing this for years. My 1275 does not have the air pump set up and I have not been able to figure out a way to mount the compressor. Please keep us posted. By the way, nice color Traveller!

Alex,
I checked Nostalgicairparts.com web site and can't seem to find anything for Austin or minis. What do they offer as parts or a kit?
Thanks,
Larry

Hey Alex,
Just curious how the A/C is coming? I live in Charleston, SC and know first hand of the need for A/C. I have a '63 1000 and am picking up a '61 Traveller this weekend, which will be the candidate for my A/C upgrade, since it has a 1295cc engine.
Any insights will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I've been considering a/c for my '59 tudor. The 1275 with the talked about dual pulley left over from the smog pump may not be up to the job. I'm considering going a different route as far as driving the compressor. The smog pulley is quite small and the belt contact area driving it is only about 25%. I think the belt will possibly slip with the extra load of the pump. That and remember the crank drives the water pump so if slippage occours the first accessory on the engine to lose drive will be the water pump. (my theory)I think I'll make up a pulley for the crankshaft. That way I can dedicate it to the a/c pump exclusivly. It looks like there is room for an a/c pump on the left side of the engine and it will have full drive from the belt (1/2 the pulley)and I can set up a proper drive ratio for the pump. Yes it will be close to the front cross member, may require surgery.
I also thought about placing the evaporator and heater in the battery box. it's very conviently located and there is already a port hole into the car in a pretty handy place. I'll move the battery to the boot. Bruce

I am very interested in how your a/c project for your traveller came out. I own a 65 Traveller that I would like to make the conversion on also and have installed a 1275 engine from a 69 Midget. If you wouldn't mind telling me what you encountered and what needed to be done I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give. Thanks in advance.

You guys make me sick, "gotta fit A/C to my Minor cos it's sooo hot here"
Well here in jolly old England on June 11 which if you had'nt noticed is officially Summer, it's 59 degrees and raining and it's been raining now for about two days with flood warnings etc. So if there are any meteorologists out there, please DO SOMETHING as I would just love to say "it's sooo hot, gotta fit some A/C."
