Hi all, just visiting from the MG side and thought I would join and introduce myself.

I may drop in with questions from time to time. At my suggestion (and very little prodding) my parents recently acquired a 67 Minor, named Sidney. He's got all his major parts and is a prime candidate for rejuvenation. He's really for my Mom, since a Morris Minor was her very first car in 1969. She got in Sidney and I swear she was 19 again. (not that i knew her when she was 19, but I infer she was something like the young lady I saw in this car last Saturday...) anyway, I look forward to participating in the conversations here. As my parents and Sidney live 400 miles away from me, vicariously will be the word of the day most days. :)

Hi all, my parents (with my prodding) just acquired a lovely 67 Morris Minor. (his name is Sidney). He's remarkably complete, except that some previous owner replaced his tail lights with a pair off a VW. I know! the shame.

I'd love to find a good deal on some tail light bases. The lenses aren't as crucial because I know they can be gotten, but the lamps themselves (as I'm sure you know) are a bit spendy. Any one got some squireled away?

Hello all,

I have been reading the a 948 smooth case shift lever will not work in the 1098 rib case control box. It seems the shaft between the pivot ball and the ball on the end with the o-ring are different lengths. (about 1/8") It seems that the through will interfere with gear engagement and release. Any thoughts on this? I have the 948 installed now and seems to work fine although it has not been drive tested. My friend has the supposedly correct 1098 lever so I can get that from him. Does anyone have thoughts on the gearshift lever differences?

Thanks,

Hello everyone,
I tried to start my 1955 Morris Minor today, only to find that it won't(td). I recently had major work (new engine) done on it, and the mechanic told me the battery went flat in the workshop in which it stood for about a month. A few clues as to what might be occurring: when I pushed the accelerator in and pulled the starter out (all the way in both cases) the dashboard lights briefly went out, there was the noise of the starter motor trying to turn the engine over, then nothing. Also, the horn sounds more muted then ever before. I am thinking flat battery. What are your thoughts?

Will 1098 Clutch/Pressure Plate bolt to a 948 flywheel (12 replies)

Greetings All,

I acquired a 1098 (10CC midget engine) and mated it with my 948 smooth case gearbox using the thin backplate. The problem I had was that the engine did not come with a flywheel. So I had the 948 flywheel with the 1.75" center bore machined out to a 2" bore and new crankshaft bolt holes drilled out to fit the 10CC crank bolt pattern. All this, with the use of the thin back plate allowed me to use the smooth case gearbox.

All worked fine until my first gear started to fail in the smooth case. I have since acquired a 1098 ribcase gearbox and want to install that behind the 1098 engine using the thicker backplate as required instead of the thin backplate.

My questions are:
I need to purchase the clutch, pressure plate and T/O bering for the 1098 ribcase gearbox. Since I have the modified 948 flywheel does the 1098 pressure plate have the same mounting bolt pattern that will fit the 948 pressure plate bolt pattern currently in the 948 flywheel?

OR, can I/should I use the 948 Clutch/Pressure Plate from my smooth case gearbox so it will bolt to the 948 flywheel?

OR, should I have the 948 flywheel drilled and tapped to work with a 1098 clutch/PP/TO?

Help please, Regards

Hello all,
I'm Yohan from Oregon. I was looking for AH parts for my Sprite and found a lot of Morris Minor Parts while traveling abroad. I am coming back on the 8th and can help some of your guys out with real cheap parts (small and light). I found a lot of steering wheels (some already reconditioned).

I did a quick ebay search and found the prices here to be close to half the price.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MORRIS-MINOR-1948-56-MG-TD-TF-STEERING-WHEEL-PROF-RECOND-REDUCED-/180492210222?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a062c902e&vxp=mtr

Please let me know what you are interested in and how much you wanna pay, They don't have set prices here I just have to bargain. They are still very cheap. (Do you know how much it might cost to ship within US).

I can get small items that can fit in a 50Lb luggage.

I am going back to the yard this weekend please let me know early.

Here are what I might be able to get you

Steering wheels
Speedos
Hub Caps
Side Mirrors
other small and light weight stuff

Please know that I am not running a business. I know how hard it was for me to find AH stuff so I just want to help you out.

Well I finally got around to running a compression test on the engine of my 1964 Traveller. Cylinders 1 through 3 are consistent right around 150 - 155 PSI. Cylinder 4 on the other hand is at 115 PSI dry and 162 wet. My initial thoughts are sticking compression rings which may also be contributing to some of my oil loss either by blow-by pressurizing the crankcase and pushing past a weak front main seal and the complete lack of a rear seal, and possibly some oil consumption in the cylinder if the oil scraping ring is also at fault. Any thoughts on addressing this would be appreciated. Obviously pulling the piston and replacing the rings is top of the "do-it-right" list but is that possible without disassembling the whole engine? Are there any other suggestions that don't involve engine disassembly? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
This company is still in business today, selling cars in Europe to tourists and then shipping them to you when you go home. In 1964 you could buy a brand new 2 door Morris Minor, with heater!!, for $1,258 tax free and then ship it to the US west coast for about $200. A Traveller cost $1,412. there's your smile for the day:)-D

Dear sir's/madame's,
I am going to re-do all the suspension of my 1962 Morris 1000 traveller.
I found some good second hand parts of a Morris 1000 4 door. I would like to ask firstly:
1) Are all the suspension parts of the 1000 4 door, the same as the 1000 traveller?
2) What are the main parts I need to change for the front suspension?
3) What are the main parts I need to change for the back suspension (leaf springs are in good shape however some absorbed between the leaf springs and it's attachment seems to have gone as each bounce is really hard on the passengers)

If possible could you give me diagrams of the parts, as I am not exactly a brain box when it comes to these things. Thanks guys for your support.

For those of you US members that enjoy great prices on Morris parts from the UK, note that the situation has changed.

Formerly, when I ordered things from there, they invariably came by mail, and there were never any odd charges after arrival. However, the last two came by UPS, which apparently now is being used. I had to pay $28 extra for the last one because of Customs charges. UPS told me that US Customs leveled charges on any package valued at more than $200. [I whimsically added some minor item to my order that pushed it $5 over that figure!].
I can't say why the US Post Office has never done this. Or maybe why UPS is so zealous, but to avoid it we might either keep our orders down to less value, or ask for mail shipment.
Note that individuals are allowed a far greater amount to bring in the country, duty-free, but they have no way to check this - yet.

Hello everyone, my name is david and i have a 1958 traveller that needs a full restoration. it has a ton of different parts in it like a 1980 fiat 124 spider motor and transmission and the original rear end which is not geared correctly. the traveller sat for about 10 years outside before i took over the project from my father. the engine has to be rebuilt and so does the transmission, and the rear axel has to be replaced or re-geared. for the amount of money i would spend on the rebuild and re-gear i can buy a 1993 miata with all its running gear. i know i will have to custom fab a ton of stuff to make the 1.6 engine for where the 2000cc fiat sits right now and miatas have rear independent suspension. so should i got through with a donor miata or try and figure out all the mismatched parts that are in the morris? i have spent over a year and a half trying to figure everything out in this car.
thank you, david

Our 1968 Traveller started to suffer high wear to the inside of the front tyres. I therefore had the tracking checked. The problem continued. Had it tracked again with a little toe in. The tyre, particularly on the driver's side still wears significantly more on the inside. I then checked the angle of wheels to vertical. The left leans out a bit at the top by about 4mm but the right - the one which has worn most - leans in at the top by about the same amount. Both front chassis legs have previously been replaced due to rusting. Both look to be in line but it would not need them to be much out to result in wheel lean. Question is, is there anything I do about it, apart from having the chassis leg cut and re-welded?

Saggy leaf spring (2 replies)

Just curious to see what others have done when faced with a sagging leaf spring. My Traveller is listing to the right (o/s). Obviously this was known to one of the previous owners and they rigged a fix that caused me no end of aggravation from a loud groaning emanating from the rear of the car. They inserted a slab of rubber between the "frame tube" and the eyelet on the leaf spring (pictures below). I'm sure that this eliminated a much louder and likely more menacing noise than the constant groaning I've been getting and has obviously introduced an artificial limit to how far the spring can sag, but it is certainly not a long-term fix. Extremely short-term, I lubricated the area with silicone lubricant which has quieted it down significantly.

So the question at hand is what have the rest of you done as your springs have begun to sag? Obviously replacement is an option, but I'd like to see if there are any other successful solutions that may save me time and money, especially if the springs are still serviceable. So long as they are not damaged, spacers can be used with coil springs to return proper ride height and of course torsion bars can be trimmed. For a leaf spring the only two options I'm aware of are re-arching and extended shackles. I have not heard any long-term success stories with re-arching and I doubt it is significantly less expensive or labor intensive than new springs. I have not researched to see if there are longer shackles nor do I know if it is really a viable solution. I'm keeping an open mind and welcome any and all feedback anyone has to offer.

Thanks in advance!

Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Eddie and my Dad and I own a 1961 Morris Minor 1000 p/u truck. A few years ago we bought it when it still had the original 948 motor, trans and rear center section. I bought a MG Midget from a customer and put the 1275 motor, rib cage trans and center section into the Morris. Shortly after, we started having issues w/ the Morris and it got backed into while parked at a Starbucks. The damage wasn't too bad, but when combined w/ the other problems the little truck was experiencing, I decided to put it into storage. Now we have pulled it back out of storage and got it running again after about 3 years of sitting. Our hope is to iron out all of the "kinks" and repair the damage to the body. I also plan on upgrading the front brakes to disc (I have almost all of the parts)Whether or not we are going to keep the little Morris is still up in the air. Right now we are leaning towards selling it.

I have a single, complete HS4 from an Austin America. I recieved it from a friend of mine because she knew I had a British car (MG) and thought I might be able to use it. I don't really have a need and would like to sell it. The story is my friend has a repair shop up in Chicago and it's been sitting there for years. It is complete and aside from a good clean up and some new gaskets, appears that it would be good to go.
I would like to get $50 for it shipped.

Hi

I have been given permission by your Webmaster Steve Nott to post on your forum about my unique range of classic car illustrations, which includes the iconic Morris Minor. Many years ago I used to drive an ex GPO Morris Minor van (with a ladder rack still attached) for a local car accessory shop, delivering vehicle parts to local garages. Hence, Morris Minors hold special memories for me.

These illustrations are produced to give the appearance of retro offset screen-printing. I am concentrating on cushion covers and greetings cards.
I have had these digitally printed and made up into cushions covers measuring 45cm x 45cm. The covers are printed on ½ Panama cotton, with a natural colour zip, and backing fabric, printed with vivid colour pigments. As I am self funding I have only had 24 covers printed and made into cushion covers, with 3 Morris Minor designs available for sale.

Alongside the cushion covers I have plans to have a range of greeting cards printed featuring images of different views of classic cars and other vehicles. These are my interpretations, with made up license plates, but I feel retain the charm of these classic vehicles.

Please see concept illustration ideas for the Morris Minor greeting cards. Selected colours, elements, and scale may well be adjusted as the artwork is developed. The cards would be professionally printed on Accent Callisto, soft white board, 300gms, and a possible size being 150mm x150 mm with accompanying envelope.

The finished cards have a slightly textured finish, which gives an excellent writing surface and superior appearance.

If you are interested in any of these products please can you private message me I can give you more details.
Thank you for your time and interest.

Isis Series I (1955–1956)

The Series I Isis was launched in 1955 as a replacement for the Morris Six MS. It featured a six-cylinder engine, the 2.6 L (2639 cc/161 in³), 86 bhp C-Series unit from the Austin Westminster. Unlike the Westminster, the Isis had a single SU carburettor. The four-speed gearbox had a column change and was available with an optional Borg-Warner overdrive unit.

The car was based on the 4-cylinder Oxford Series II, sharing its almost-unibody shell and torsion bar front suspension. The wheelbase and front end were lengthened to accept the larger straight-6 engine, and a "woody" 2-door estate version was a novelty. With the strong engine, the Isis could reach 90 mph (145 km/h).

Unlike its sister car the Austin Westminster, which enjoyed moderate success against the volume-selling Ford and Vauxhall sixes of the time, sales were poor, with just 8,500 sold.

Isis Series II (1956–1958)

The Morris Isis Series II was based on the Morris Oxford Series III body but with longer wheelbase and front wings & bonnet to accommodate the 6-cylinder engine.

In line with changes to the corresponding Oxford line, BMC redesigned the Isis for 1956 with updated styling including a more elaborate mesh grille, chrome side strips and small fins. The engine power increased to 90 bhp. An automatic transmission option was also added. The manual version had a four-speed box operated by a short gearstick located on the right-hand side of the front bench seat. The handbrake lever was located just behind the gearstick. Sales remained weak, and the line ended in 1958.

A de luxe saloon with overdrive tested by the British magazine The Motor in 1956 had a top speed of 90 mph (140 km/h) and could accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 17.6 seconds. A fuel consumption of 26.2 miles per imperial gallon (10.8 L/100 km; 21.8 mpg-US) was recorded. The test car cost £1025 including taxes. The overdrive unit had added £63 to the price.

Morris Isis (1929–1935) and Twenty Five (1933–1935)

The Isis was a revised version of the 1927 Morris Six (JA series) and used the same 2468 cc engine and 3-speed gearbox. It had an all-new chassis, and the steel body had an American look, not surprising, as the body pressing dies from Budd were shared with some Dodge models.[3]

It was the first Morris to have hydraulic brakes and chromium plating replaced the previous nickel finish on brightwork.

The car could exceed 65 mph (105 km/h) and return 28 miles per imperial gallon (10 L/100 km; 23 mpg-US).

After 3939 of the original Isis model had been made it received a facelift in 1932. The steel panel body was replaced by the traditional wood frame construction. Mechanically the car was similar but the gearbox received a fourth speed. The chassis received additional cross bracing in 1934 and an automatic clutch and freewheel were fitted to some models. 3467 of the new Isis were made (including Twenty-Five models).[1]

A deluxe version, the Morris Twenty-Five was launched at the 1932 London Motor Show with larger 3485 cc engine.

I have been looking at the various types of sound deadening materials on the market and thought I should ask for opinions. What works best for the 4 Door Morris Minor 1000?? I have heard of the rave reviews for stuff like RAT mat, Dynamat and other modern high tech solutions. I am thinking that a low tech Morris might require a different approach, any comments welcome!!

After a 7-year hiatus I'm starting to focus on restarting the Morris project. The car "ran" before I disassembled it but it has been on jack stands since 2006 and my familiarity with the car has dwindled a bit. The wiring looks a little dodgy and are some electrical topics that need to be pursued.

One: The car had a Lucas alternator on it, which apparently worked. However, the car also has the regulator box and I have no idea what the previous owner did (if anything) to the regulator,wiring-wise, when the alternator swap was done. I've seen some related posts on the MGA sites, but are there any links that would make this wiring project more understandable?

Two: I'm guessing the 8-way flasher relay works but wouldn't be averse to replacing it. I also want to install headlight relays. Any tips on how best to make this transition?

Three: I'm thinking of replacing the pull-type starter solenoid with a keyed version. Also, years ago I bought a gear-reduction starter and a 5-speed conversion kit from the late Paul Asgeirsson. So, I might need some tips on the starter solenoid part of the project as well.

There'll be no rush on any of this; it's going to take a fair amount of thinking to get back on track with this all.

Thanks in advance!

My car runs so well, but blows head gaskets every six months or so. She has a 1275cc stock engine. Head and block were skimmed in a recent rebuild, and according to a straight edge and file are true. studs are old and maybe a bit stretched, but should be fine. always torqued in correct sequence to 45 lbs. any ideas as to why she eat gaskets?

I add, she used to blow between #2 and #3, and leak oil at the seams a bit. Now I have exhaust in the radiator, and a bit of foam in the oil and in the water.
Of course, she still runs quite well, but I will replace the gasket Saturday morning during the weekly bonding session.

I wonder if anyone can help.
My Morris Traveller keeps dying. I am happily trundling along and suddenly for no reason loose power, then the engine dies. I try to start - nothing. Leave it for a while and then it starts. It then goes for a while and goes and goes and then does it again. Trouble was got it going again the other night went round the block and then it died. Our classic car policy includes Axa recovery - well took them nearly 2.5 hours to a priority call as it was freezing cold, I had my 10 yr old son cold, hungry, crying to go home and wrapped up in a picnic rug... and no idea what to do..
Any suggestions.
(Mum said the similar thing happened to her 1950's VW Beetle, but can't remember what it was as that was in the 60's)

Forgot to say. It's a 1974 1098 Morris Traveller (UK), with dynamo.

I have managed to collect several things in my garage that I don't need. I have 4 Morris hubcaps in what I would call "unrestored" condition--lots of pitting but no dents. $25.00 for the set. I also have a set of original Morris wheels-these are in nice shape as I have cleaned and Por15-ed these. $40.00 for the set. Plus I have a nice set of the 13" Rostyle wheels that have the 4x4 bolt pattern. These are in good shape, but you would need to clean, sand, and paint these if you want them looking new. $30.00 for the set.

I am in Orlando, FL, so the buyer will have to pay the shipping or either come by and pick them up if you are visiting the Mouse out at Disney. If you are interested, I will send you some pictures.

This is about my 1960 (we think) Morris Minor Traveller restoration project, but first I would like to introduce myself. I have grown up around car and have always been fond of the "little cars," the classic mini, mg midgets, triumphs, and all the other ones we have in north america, and I always wanted one. So at the age of 17 I was looking at the classifieds and saw and ad for a Morris Minor Traveller in need of total restoration. I looked them up and was amazed at how cool they are, and how many parts are available for them. So I went and looked at it, and the next week it was home. I started in on it right away, taking it apart and documenting every nut, bolt and nail. I have taken just shy of 150 pictures already, and have one video, which can be seen here:

pictures can be seen here: http://razzi.me/albums/22790-morris-minor-traveller-restoration-project I am hoping to have it finished in about a year and for less than $10,000 if I can. I will be doing all the work except paint, and glass, if I can. Please go check out the video and pictures and let me know what you think and if you have any tips, pointers, or advice that would be fantastic.

Hi Guys

I am the lucky owner of a 2 door 1959 Morris 1000. After a year of ownership we have finally got the car running great. And now it is time for stage 2. After buying my first Minor in 1992 and having owned several, I have found that it is uniquely attractive to young people and so I am about to start on a healthy eating project.

The project will be visiting several areas in and around the Clay Country of Cornwall. We will be building a healthy eating trailer out of the rear end of a Morris Minor. I want to rescue a rotting shell but I haven't got one to rescue. Does anyone know of one that we could use for the project.

I will post pictures and try to keep everyone up on the project.

Thanks

As some of you know I was looking for a Traveller and I found one (1964) in Washington State. Now I have found one right here in the Sun Valley, Idaho area. It is at the storage club where I store my 64 Corvette. This is the Sun Valley Auto Club.

It is a 1968 light mist green, black interior, RHD, all complete and with what looks like a 1275cc MG engine. Still has British plate which says that it was white and left UK in 1996. Last registered in Oregon mid 2000. Been in storage for awhile. Mechanic just went over car. Wood needs work but not replacement. Paint good. Interior good. Obviously, the car needs detailing. Tires/wheels good. Runs. Rust in floor pans( so probably needs new pans) but rest of car good. The owner of SVAC bought it and would like to sell it as is. Apparently owner left it and moved to Russia. Any interest and I can get name, number, email, etc.

Let me know if I can help.

Yesterday, I picked up my newly repainted Morris Minor! The car has gone from a non-period red colour over multiple layers of paint to a bare metal respray in the original black that the car left the factory with. It's certainly not a factory level paint job, however! I'm very pleased with the result and have begun reassembling the car to get it back in working order. It's probably going to take me a few days to get everything back together, though most of the exterior chrome, lamps, etc. are done. I didn't have them paint the engine bay as I plan to pull the engine and gearbox for a rebuild, potentially later this summer, at which point I'll have the same shop paint the bare engine bay while the engine is being put back together. I've got a new interior from Newton Commercial to go with the new paint job, so hopefully soon I should have a very presentable car again. As I get things put together I'll continue to post pictures to this thread.

Hi all, I'm new here.

I've had my 1968 Morris 1000 four door for about three months or more now and in that time I've done about three and a half thousand miles. We use it on a daily basis as our sole means of transport and as such it means I don't get an awful lot of time to work on the chap.

Just a quick bit of history; It was purchased by Mrs Anderson (long shot but does anyone who knows her recognise our car) in 1968 and lived in Fleet, Somerset for a lot of it's life. She used it frequently up until around ten years ago when it came off the road as the price she had been quoted to get it tidied up was over four thousand pounds. I saw it in a local garage last year covered in dust and crap, bought it for four hundred pounds, fitted new brakes and spent five days welding and away he went. All I did to the engine was clean the points in the fuel pump and dizzy and put in fresh fuel.

Ok, I have a fair amount of mechanical experience but none with this particular car. The main reason for me asking these questions is becasue I need the Morris to be off the road for as little time as possible so want to have a firm idea of what I'm fixing before I fix it.

Problems; The tracking seems to be off. The steering wheel is over to the right about a 1/5th of a turn to keep the wheels straight. All tracking arms/ tie rods look to be solid and bolted up.

We do get some knocking and banging when going over rougher road. I thought maybe this could be bad bushings? Could be tie rods etc and may be related to bad tracking? Wheel bearings?

The same goes for the rear end. It's certainly a hell of a bump if you accidentaly hit a pot hole. If that is just how it is, I'm more than fine with it. I just don't want to be doing any damage to the poor lad.

I have also noticed that one side (NS) has slumped at the rear and is running three inches lower than the other. Shakle plates are fine, as is the mounting to the body, as are the leaf springs them selves. Ideas?

I think that's all for now. The engine mounts could do with renewal and I'll do a top end rebuild in the new few weeks. I'll also probably fit one of the accuspark electronic ignitions. I have one in our Bedford CA Dormobile and it's great.

Sorry to ramble so much.

Cheers,

Morris Minor Required for Film Shoot (no replies)

Hello there,

First time poster so unsure where to post this! Basically, my name's Elliot Moore and I'm a final year Television Production student at Bournemouth University's media academy. I'm currently producing a graduate project at the University, which in short is a ten minute drama set in 1950s Cold War Britain. The film's main character, Sinclair, is a British Intelligence Operative, and in order to emphasise the time period, we are looking for a Morris Minor to serve as his vehicle within the film.

We are looking for a passionate Morris Minor owner to join us on the shoot. The shoot will take place across four days in Dorset, between the 13th and 17th March, though we most likely will only need the vehicle and owner for two days of the shoot. Unfortunately being a graduate project, the budget is understandably limited, so we would most likely only be able to cover expenses (petrol, meals and drinks). However, this could potentially be negotiated.

The film's director is Ben Witt - you can see an example of his work here : https://vimeo.com/57249160

He is a really talented guy, and while some of his stuff is a little bit quirky and surreal, with this project he is looking to make something more serious - the script is fantastic, and I'm certain the finished project will be something that anyone taking part will be really proud of and remember fondly. We would fully credit your role within the film, provide you with a DVD copy, invite you to a premiere screening of the film, and potentially to subsequent screenings at festivals.

If anyone on this site is interested at all, please e-mail me at eli.m.films@gmail.com and we can discuss the project and your thoughts in greater detail.

Thank you for reading this,
